Warren H. Manning of Boston, Massachusetts, penned this 1926 promotional booklet for the first sector of Jemison & Company’s “country homes” in today’s Mountain Brook, Alabama. Manning, the general planner for Mountain Brook, employed by Jemison & Company from 1926 to 1929, sets forth the design principles for the development. The intent was “to preserve the alluring native beauty of the woodland scene” that is showcased in 11 scenic photographs and “adroitly blend it with the conveniences of city life.” Manning presents the architect’s drawings of the types of architecture appropriate for the varied topographic conditions of the initial 400-acre sector. Reprinted in1997.
