The Birmingham District

The indispensible guide to the rise of area industry and communities.

The Birmingham District was originally conceived as a guide, principally an architectural guide, to the communities surrounding the City of Birmingham. Research for the book quickly led to investigation of the industrial history of the area, for most of the original development of Birmingham was prompted by the growth of industrial enterprise. The maps included as a principal feature of this volume show the physical relationships between the geology, early trails, subsequent roads, and railroads, communities, mines and industrial plants comprising the Birmingham District, and are also intended to guide the interested reader to the historic sites of the area.
